Budapest Airport To Publish Its First Environmental Report |
 "Budapest Airport (BA) announced today the publication of the first “Environmental Report” of its history. “Budapest Airport’s approach to sustainable aviation – Environmental report 2006” provides information on the company’s “green actions” for experts and non-experts alike.The 16-page long publication presents in detail what happened last year and is planned in the future in the field of noise protection, the improvement of air quality, water protection and waste management.

In 2006, BA launched a comprehensive working process with the contribution of HungaroControl and international experts. As a result of this BA submitted the Noise Protection Program on 28 February, 2007, including 17 plus 4 proposals in order to minimize the impact of aircraft noise.
BA has also developed a number of initiatives to minimize airport emissions and improve air quality. These include among others the introduction of aircraft taxiing at idle power and the scrapping of 90 airport vehicles. As a result the carbon-dioxid emission in 2006 was at 18.861 tons, well below the 19.520 tons allowance/year ensured for the company.
Energy consumption at the airport stayed at a record low with 20 kWh/ passenger. This is 30% lower than in 2003 and in accordance with BA’s energy efficiency policy. The reduction of the pipeline temperatures and the prevention of overheating are measures that contribute to this result.
The sewage production per passenger levels has also decreased by 52% from 2002. Last year also saw the initiation of a new project to build a structure that will save the Gyáli-brook from contaminated precipitation waters.
In 2006 BA published a leaflet entitled “Wildlife of Ferihegy” depicting the airport’s ecosystem. BA has also developed new, “natural” methods to keep the birds away from aircrafts. The Bird Control team can now count on the services of a dog, several hawks and falcons – as well as professionals.
Budapest Airport CEO, Jost Lammers said: “With this publication we would like to emphasize the importance of environmental protection and to inform the public about our actions on this field. Our aim is to find the right balance between the growing requirements of aviation and the protection of our environment. We consider the principles of sustainable development to be authoritative, and that is to minimize our ecological footprint.”
