"Another giant step for cricket in Hungary was taken on the weekend of June 7-8, when an instructor from the European Cricket Council came to Budapest to run an ICC Introduction to Cricket course, the first rung on the sport's coaching qualifications' ladder. The 10 participants from Hungary (four Hungarians and six expats) were given a tough workout as they learned lots of coaching games, on top of some theory of how to be a good cricket coach.“He really made us sweat,” said Ferenc Zsigri (a player for the Danubian Kangaroos and one of the managers of Kancellar.hu, the new sponsor of Hungarian cricket). “Now I’m looking forward to putting my notes into effect in our squad of new Hungarian players.”
Zsigri is part of the native Hungarian team travelling to Slovakia on Saturday (June 14) for its very first international match. This is yet another of the developments in the sport in this country, which will see the second season of the Hungarian Cricket League start on Saturday June 28, and run through the summer until Finals Day at the end of September.
However, among all the progress there is one thing holding cricket in Hungary back – the need for practice nets in Budapest.
“All we need is a small piece of land, 30 x 10 meters,” said Zsigri.
“The money is ready, the builder is ready, we just need some space.”
The league would be delighted to hear from anyone who could help, and would welcome approaches via info@hungary4cricket.com.
