'Drawings Of French Masters', Museum of Fine Arts, Until 12 May |
"The establishment of the Louvre drawings collection started during the 17th century. Following the order of the Sun King in 1690, at the time of the death of Charles de Brun, the court painter of Louis XIV, the legacy of the artist was taken into royal possession. Drawings by his successors, Pierre Mignard and Antoine Coypel arrived at the Louvre in the same way. This significant compound of drawings represents the core of the current collection, and the repertory of that time has been extended through regular purchases. Louvre experts have chosen the eighty most beautiful drawings of their collection for the Museum of Fine Arts, among them works by famous artists (Poussin, Watteau, Boucher, David) and virtuosos (Vouet, Lemoyne or Greuze). The selection also pays special attention to artists whose works are represented in the Budapest collection (Verdier, Boissieu, André Le Brun). The exhibition, both chronologic and thematic, covers two hundred years of French drawings, and lists a large number of artists. The most outstanding artists are represented with a selection of many sheets and in this way visitors can witness to the widest possible extent the evolution of their talent evolves in this multifunctional, technically varied genre."
