Joulupukki Arrives By Air

Joulupukki Arrives By Air
"Joulupukki, Finland's Father Christmas, arrived in Budapest on 30 November with some help from the Malév Helsinki service. In order to give Santa Claus an appropriate reception, Malév invited orphans and kindergarten children from Budapest to come out to the airport and welcome Joulupukki with songs and poems.

It is now a tradition for Malév to bring Finland's Father Christmas all the way from Rovaniemi in Lapland to Budapest. As usual, from the moment of his arrival Joulupukki finds himself surrounded by children, initially some 100 small guests from the capital's orphanages and the XVIII district Napsugár Nursery School.

Of course, the children's enthusiastic singing was rewarded with presents from Santa, who then went on to tell of his far-away home inhabited by elves and reindeer, from where all children are closely watched to see that they are being good and the whole year is spent preparing for the festive season.

After meeting the children Joulupukki was greeted by Jari Vilen, Finland's Ambassador, and staff of Finnagora, the Finnish cultural and science centre.

Father Christmas's programme in Hungary comprises several stops including visits to children in Miskolc, Veszprém and Nyíregyháza. In Budapest, children can meet up with Joulupukki at the traditional Vörösmarty Square Christmas Fair.

Finnagora: window on Finland
Finnagora is the centre of Finnish culture, science and business in Hungary. Its aim is to promote contemporary Finnish art and culture, science and education as well as business in Hungary. Finnagora stimulates interaction and develops mutually advantageous networks between the two countries. Joulupukki's stay in Hungary is sponsored by Finnagora, the town of Rovaniemi in Finland, Finnair and Malév Hungarian Airlines."
