Kijima Taiko – Traditional Japanese Drums, National Concert Hall, 7 May

They participated at the engagement ceremony and then the wedding of Prince Akisino and Princess Kiko with a celebratory taiko (group drumming). Their dynamic, energetic performances attracted great attention and overnight they found themselves famous.
 
These days, as they stretch ever wider the boundaries of traditional Japanese drumming, they work with jazz singers and dance formations. They place great importance on perfecting their instrumental skills and every year, thus they appear five times at the International Taiko Festival in San Francisco. They perform frequently in Europe; in 2005 they were invited to the Wiltz International Music Festival in Luxembourg as part of the “EU-Japan Year of People to People Exchanges” where the audience greeted them with ecstatic applause.

In 2001 they won the top prize at the Otaiko Competition in Fukui, Japan. In 2003 they beat veteran adult groups to win the “general drum” category at their first attempt at the Tokyo International Wadaiko Contest and they repeated this feat in 2006. They were the first drummers ever to achieve this distinction twice.
