Jazz Friday: Premier Of The Lush Life Quintet , Nyitott Műhely, 21 March
"The late great John Coltrane and singer Johnny Hartman cut their unforgettable album, "Lush life" 45 years ago. If you know someone who hates jazz, try an experiment. Secure a rope, tie that person to a chair (not too tight) and play "Lush Life" for them.

Don't forget your stopwatch to measure how quickly their expression dissolves from resentment to bliss. The folks at Guinness World Records keep track of such things. Cynics may dismiss this song about "jazz and cocktails" as make-out music, with more atmosphere than oxygen. But it boggles the mind that Strayhorn at 19 could write so profoundly, just as Hartman's romantic baritone boggles the heart. "Lush Life" is make-out music for the gods.

This time the noted Hungarian jazz writer and critic, KORNEL ZIPERNOVSZKY came up with the brilliant idea to have those marvellous tunes updated by a really all-star Hungarian formation. LUSH LIFE QUINTET are

BALAZS FELLEGI vocals
GABOR BOLLA tenor-sax - pictured above
ARPAD 'TZUMO' OLAH piano
AKOS JONAS bass
ANDRAS 'PECEK' LAKATOS drums

NYITOTT MUHELY is in the XIIth DISTRICT on the BUDA side of town at RATH GYORGY UTCA 4

The entrance is directly from the street.

(Rath Gyorgy utca is off Alkotas utca, more or less opposite Deli palyaudvar - the Southern Rail Terminal)

ENTRY FEE is 1200 FORINTS - All proceeds from that go to the musicians. The bar-cum-buffet serves the best selection of teas in town, also decent wines, beer and delicious but high-cholesterol home-made Hungarian sandwiches at very reasonable prices.

THE OPEN WORKSHOP ATTRACTS A HIGHLY CIVILISED CROWD WITH A GREATER SPRINKLING OF ENGLISH-SPEAKERS THAN USUAL AND, IF YOU'RESTUCK FOR BABY-SITTERS, IT'S SAFE TO BRING YOUR CHILDREN PROVIDED THEY LEAVE THE SCREAMING TO THE PERFORMERS.

All are welcome by the Harmonia Jazz Workshop (Csaba Deseo, George Kerekes,Peter Pallai) and the Open Workshop (Laszlo Finta & His Wonderful Volunteers)"
