"A Russian-Hungarian joint venture will carry out the largest export of apples to Russia in twenty years. Farmers agreed to sell 4,000 tons of edible apples to the Central Russian city of Celjabinsk, a 1.2 million market.The first shipment has already left Szabolcs county and the last transport will be completed in May. The Russians have paid the €65 million purchase price in advance.
This year, apple harvest yields totalled 550-600,000 tons, four-fifths of it coming from Szabolcs country. Hungarian farmers are only permitted to sell under 10% of the harvest as premium quality, even if it meets criteria. Juice-quality apples pay only Ft 8-12 per kilo."
