Szeged Symphony Orchestra, National Concert Hall, 6 May |
"The Szeged Symphony Orchestra was led for a decade until the end of World War II by the young Ferenc Fricsay, but other major names conducted the musicians during this time such as Willem Mengelberg, Erich Kleiber and Pietro Mascagni who conducted his own opera. In 1969, legendary conductor and composer Viktor Vaszy organised the orchestra into an independent institution which has been the foundation of the second largest opera company in Hungary, the Szeged National Theatre ever since. In the past decades, the new organisational framework gave the opportunity for the ensemble to evolve into an important concert orchestra, primarily through the work of its chief conductors.
Following Vaszy, the orchestra was led by Tamás Pál from 1975 and Géza Oberfrank from 1983. From 1991 to 1999 chief conductor was Ervin Acél but other significant names worked with the orchestra including Roberto Benzi, János Ferencsik, Lamberto Gardelli, Karl Richter and Carlo Zecchi.
Since 1999, the post of director-conductor has been occupied by Sándor Gyüdi who trained initially in mathematics and physics, but founded a choir during his student years and at last decided to pursue a career in music, in conducting.
After graduating from the Budapest Academy of Music, he joined the Szeged National Theatre but besides Hungary, has been asked to conduct opera in France, Holland and Great Britain. Alongside his theatre activities, he has conducted many orchestra concerts and in Spain has even performed almost fifty times.
