New Showing In Budapest: 'The Golden Compass'

New Showing In Budapest: 'The Golden Compass'
"Set in an alternative world where people's souls manifest themselves as animals, talking bears fight wars, and Gyptians and witches co-exist. At the center of the story is Lyra, a 12-year-old girl who starts out trying to rescue a friend who's been kidnapped by a mysterious organization known as the Gobblers - and winds up on an epic quest to save not only her world, but ours as well."

Movie type: Fantasy Adventure - This is an effects-heavy fantasy film aimed largely at the younger set. Like the book series this is based on, the film is controversial due to perceived anti-Christian messages. Fans of stars Nicole Kidman and especially Daniel Craig may be disappointed by their very limited screen time.

Director: Chris Weitz

Starring: Nicole Kidman (Marisa Coulter), Daniel Craig (Lord Asriel), Dakota Blue Richards (Lyra Belacqua)

Length: 1 hr. 54 min.

Script: Philip Pullman

Reviews:

” Craig, Kidman and Richards deliver affecting performances that lend heft and humanity to the overriding whimsy.” By Jeanne Aufmuth

“It contains at least one fresh idea: in this fantasy world, everyone comes equipped with a "daemon," or a spirit animal that accompanies you everywhere.” By Jeffrey M. Anderson

“The Golden Compass is set in a retro-futurist version of the real world: a faintly Gilliamesque place of bizarrely crowded neo-classic cities and Heath Robinson flying machines.” By Peter Bradshaw
