"Sumida-gawa - which was formed in the Muromachi period in the 15th century - tells the tragic story of a mother, who departs from Kyoto to look for her son. The story unfolds from the dialogue between the mother and the ferryman of the River Sumida.Sumida-gawa is one of the oldest, but still most well-known and most popular Japanese Noh plays. One of the most influential British composers of the 20th Century, Benjamin Britten (during his 1956 visit to Japan) saw the Sumida-gawa. The play had such an outstanding impact on him that he composed a church parable entitled Curlew River.
The main character is played by Sakurama Ujin, the 21st generation descendant of the musician-actor family that is proved to have been playing from the 16th century in the court of the Hosokava samurai family."
