Well-Informed Advice From British Embassy

Well-Informed Advice From British Embassy
"Around 400,000 British people visit Hungary each year, and the overwhelming majority have an enjoyable and trouble-free stay. However, the British Embassy does receive reports from a number of British visitors to Hungary who have experienced problems here. In recent years the most frequently reported problems have included:

* theft of money and/or passports; and
* visitors being overcharged by some night-clubs, bars and restaurants
* then physically intimidated - or actually assaulted - to force them to pay unlisted and inflated prices.

The Embassy has a responsibility to advise British visitors of the potential problems they could encounter during visits to Hungary.

The Embassy does not publish a list of establishments in which tourists have encountered problems. Instead the Embassy provides information about the types of problems reported, and how to avoid them, on our website at www.traveladvice.britishembassy.hu.

The Embassy is producing posters and leaflets advising visitors how to have a trouble-free stay (as part of a global campaign to ensure British travellers are better informed about the countries they are visiting). We are also working closely with the Tourism Office of Budapest on their latest "Well-Informed in Budapest" leaflet, which will be re-issued this year in English as well as Hungarian, German, French and Italian.

We hope our efforts to better inform visitors to Hungary will result in a reduction in the number of visitors encountering problems here, to the benefit of the Hungarian tourism industry."
