Now one of the living legends of music, he began conducting in his native America at the age of nine and has worked with over a hundred and fifty ensembles in over five thousand concerts and opera performances and also made three hundred records and CDs. He is an honorary member of the Vienna Philharmonic and conducted the famous New Year’s Concert on four occasions.

Ernő Dohnányi also had a close relationship with Vienna: he composed his one movement Concert Piece in the early years of the 20th century when at the peak of his successes as a concert pianist, he had to divide his time between Budapest and the Imperial capital. T

oday’s soloist of the work will be Róbert Nagy who in 1987 was appointed solo cellist of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. He joined the Vienna Philharmonic in 1992 and in 2005, was named cello soloist.

The Vienna Philharmonic makes its first return to the Palace of Arts for over a year. Since it was formed in 1842, the orchestra has made an indelible mark in music history. Richard Wagner described the orchestra as being one of the most outstanding in the world, Johannes Brahms counted himself as a “friend and admirer”, and Richard Strauss summarized these sentiments by saying: “All praise of the Vienna Philharmonic reveals itself as understatement”. 

Since 1933 only guest conductors have worked with the orchestra, which functions as a democratically directed association. The musicians endeavour to implement the motto with which Beethoven, whose symphonic works served as a catalyst for the creation of the orchestra, prefaced his Missa Solemnis: “From the heart, may it go to the heart”.
