One and a half million Hungarians live in dwellings unfit for human habitation. No bathroom, toilet out in the yard, windows that let in the cold air, walls black from smoke. In Ág, a small village in the southern Hungarian Baranya county, the locals washed themselves in wash tubs. Last year Habitat for Humanity appeared and offered building material for volunteer work.

Successful drug prevention is more than just a police officer in front of a blackboard talking about the harms of the different drugs. Only long-term programs can be successful but they are expensive and the schools have no money. Civil organisations would do it for free but they hardly get any state support.

Betti tried to continue her studies but left because she was the only Gypsy at the school. Attila was completely dissuaded from studying. A “B” grade is a bad grade for Tünde, and Joseph doesn’t want to be a public works employee like his father.
