The Holocaust Memorial Museum of Washington, DC, condemned Hungary granting a state award to journalist Zsolt Bayer and called for rescinding the award. The USHMM said the award is intended to recognize individuals who demonstrate excellence in service to the country and “the promotion of universal human values”.

More than half of Hungarian households finance the start of the school year using credit, an opposition Socialist politician Ildikó Borbely Bangó told a news conference. Data available show that more than 18% of parents have taken up a loan to pay for the items such as clothing and equipment their children need to start school.

Nobel laureate author Imre Kertész died at age 86 after a long and serious illness, the publisher Magvető said. The novelist, essayist and translator was the first Hungarian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, becoming a Nobel laureate in 2002.

I have the distinct feeling that something is afoot in Hungary, something the self-satisfied Orbán government is not prepared for. I see the beginnings of a movement that may well overcome the current apathy and resignation of Hungarian society and produce active resistance to the Orbán regime.
