Parts of the south and north ends of Budapest are already under water, but locals and specialised crews are working hard to make sure the flood defences hold firm.

While record floodwaters are racing down the river, leaving some towns and villages partly swamped, these creative Hungarians are turning this emergency into a skimboarding party.
