Defense Attache Mark Karas and Cultural Affairs Officer Dmitri Tarakhovsky attended a ceremony honoring Mihaly Kovats on May 10, 2013 in Karcag. Colonel Kovats, a native of Karcag, recruited, trained and led the first U.S. cavalry unit into battle and died on May 11, 1779, in a cavalry charge against British troops outside of Charleston, South Carolina.

Daughter of the late Louis Russell, the long-time musical director for Louis Armstrong, Ms. Russell enchanted the audience with her voice, wit, and personal warmth and earned a standing ovation for a performance of a traditional Hungarian jazz song in Hungarian.
