The suspects arrived from Slovakia in a car with Ukrainian plates, and broke into the apartments in six districts of the capital between Sept 15-25, taking electronics, jewellery, watches and cash, causing damages worth nearly 17 million forints (EUR 46,300), Sandor Gal, department head at the metropolitan police, said.

The police suspected that the burglaries were connected and that the burglars were using a car. They checked security cameras in each area and spotted a dark blue Toyota, with Ukrainian plates, occupied by three men. The car was identified on Sept 25 and its passengers detained in cooperation with the anti-terrorism police, Gal said.

During a search of the suspects and the car, police found special lock-picking tools and substances suspected of being drugs, along with some of the stolen goods and part of the cash. The cases were linked by the fact that all the break-ins occurred in daytime and the intruders opened the front doors without damage each time.

Police suspect the gang, two of whom carried out the burglaries while the third acted as driver, were "travelling criminals" who had been in Hungary since Aug 28. They will contact the authorities of the suspects' countries of citizenship, as well as surrounding countries, to establish whether they committed crimes elsewhere.

The suspects, who refused to cooperate, will remain in custody for 30 days.
