Europe’s Largest 3D-Capable Cinema LED Screen Opens in Budapest
A major upgrade at Lurdy Cinema has introduced a 62-square-metre Samsung Onyx LED display, replacing the conventional projection system in one of its auditoriums. The 4K screen is also capable of showing 3D content, offering a markedly different cinema experience from a traditional projector and screen.

Lurdy Cinema’s Room 10 has now reopened following a year-long development project featuring the special Samsung Onyx LED screen. The installation is described by the cinema as the largest 3D-capable Onyx screen in Europe.

Unlike a conventional movie theater, where a projector beams an image onto a separate screen, Samsung Onyx is itself the display. Its LED panels produce their own light, allowing the system to deliver deep blacks, high contrast and consistent brightness across the entire screen.

The system supports 4K resolution, accurate colour reproduction and refresh rates of up to 120 Hz, while HDR technology is designed to improve detail in both bright and dark scenes. The LED display also eliminates the need for a traditional projection room.

Samsung Onyx was introduced in 2017 and was the first cinema LED system to receive Digital Cinema Initiatives certification, a requirement for cinemas showing major theatrical releases.

The new screen arrives as cinemas compete with increasingly large home televisions and streaming services. Annual cinema ticket sales in Hungary were around 15 - 16 million in 2018 - 2019 but are now closer to 10 million.

The upgraded auditorium is intended to offer an experience that cannot be easily replicated at home. It also features premium reclining seats and a Dolby 7.1 sound system.

Lurdy Cinema is located at Lurdy Ház, 1097 Budapest, Könyves Kálmán körút 12–14.
