1. Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Budapest. I am a city girl, but I spent my summers in the Balaton Uplands, Káli-medence, where we have a 150-year-old farmhouse in a small village with only one road in and out.

2. If you could be an expat anywhere in the world, where would you choose?

Any city in Italy, north or south. I’ve been there countless times, but I can’t get enough of the people, food, style, proximity to the sea, and the staggering wealth of art, heritage, and historic monuments. There’s a ritual: whenever I cross the border, I stop at the first gas station and have a ristretto. It tastes so different that it makes me feel I have arrived. Or Berlin.

3. What would you miss most if you moved away from Hungary?

My relatives, my friends, my home, my terrace, my life as a local. It would be really hard. It came up from time to time, but I never thought about it really seriously.

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend — what must they absolutely see and do?

Budapest has a fantastic setting along the Danube. I would absolutely take them for a walk across the Elisabeth Bridge. I would also take them to a spa, Széchenyi or Lukács. And there is a new vegan bakery in the gentrified, vibrant part of the 8th district. They work solely with organic, locally sourced, traditional Hungarian wheat varieties. They offer brunch, and their selection is really something to taste, something Hungarian, way beyond töltött káposzta.

5. What is your favourite food?

I don't have one, I am open to all. I prefer seasonal, though. Recently, I have been eating less meat and discovered the endless horizon of vegan ingredients and dishes.

6. What is your favourite sport / form of exercise?

Running. I just step out of the gate and run. I love it. It cleans my mind and challenges my body. But I know I am 51, and I’m also about to include some regular stretching and strengthening workouts in my routine.

7. What is your favourite place in Hungary?

Budapest, Káli-medence, and Zala megye with its hills and little lakes.

8. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?

Vegetable fermentation, sourdough baking, and experimenting with different ingredients and recipes on a professional level. I practice each, but I would love to master these crafts and turn my passion into a profession.

9. What’s a job you would definitely never want?

Prison officer.

10. Where did you spend your last vacation?

Mostly in Káli-medence. I had always taken Lake Balaton for granted, but this summer, I saw it as if for the first time. I was amazed by its peace, grandeur, colors, and sunsets. I went for long swims.

11. Where do you hope to spend your next one?

I would settle for the same next year.

12. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?

On the verge of adulthood, we starved to discover life. We hung out, went to concerts, watched movies, and partied. My friends and I would talk for hours on end - if not in person, then on the landline—and during the summer, we wrote handwritten letters to each other. My favourite music shows were 120 Minutes, Headbanger’s Ball, and Yo MTV RAP on MTV. If I had to name one musician, I would say Nick Cave. My favourite film was The Good, the Bad and the Ugly – still is.

13. Apart from temptation, what can't you resist?

Coffee.

14. Red wine or white?

White, chilled, in the summer, with a lot of sparkling water.

15. Book or movie?

Book, no question.

16. Morning person or night person?

I am a night person, but I try to shift because I love the early morning hours so much.

17. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?

We support the organization that does the most for poor and homeless people. They run preschools and schools for disadvantaged, underprivileged, and neurodivergent kids, and take on an incredible amount of work in providing homeless services.

We also support quite a few independent media outlets, as independent and credible information is more critical today than ever.

18. Buda or Pest side?

Buda

19. Which achievement in your life are you most pleased about?

My family.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?

„Nem az a szép, ami szép, ami tetszik, az a szép.”

This line is from a traditional Hungarian folk song, and here is a rough English translation:

It is not what is beautiful that is beautiful, but what I like is beautiful. As the English say: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
