In most languages the word for cinema is something similar to the French term cinématographe, originally coined by the Lumière brothers in the 1890s, who borrowed it from the Greek κίνημα (kínēma, “movement”) adding the French suffix -graphe. Not in Hungarian.

Hungary’s opposition parties slammed the government’s planned referendum on the European Union’s proposed mandatory migrant quota scheme after the supreme court approved the vote in a binding decision. The Kúria rejected appeals submitted against the National Election Committee’s decision to pass the referendum question.

Hungarian opposition parties have urged the government to take measures in light of the international offshore scandal dubbed “Panama Papers”. The radical nationalist Jobbik party insisted that lawmakers with ties to offshore companies should be stripped of their mandates. MPs should sign affidavits that they have no ties with offshore companies, Jobbik lawmaker György Szilágyi said.
Tõkés Stripped Of Romanian Honour

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has stripped MEP László Tõkés of his state decoration, the Star of Romania. Tõkés was given the honour for his role in the 1989 revolution by the previous President Traian Basescu.

On Monday Prime Minister Viktor Orbán posted the following on his Facebook page: “This is a great day for Hungarian filmmaking. Thank you, everybody”. He was expressing his congratulations after László Nemes’ “Son of Saul” won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in Los Angeles.

The opposition parties criticised Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s parliamentary briefing about last week’s European Union summit. Radical nationalist Jobbik leader Gábor Vona told parliament that it is not enough that Orbán says he refuses the EU migrant quota system but a constitutional amendment is needed to give way to a referendum about the scheme.
