A true musical polymath, Jörg Widmann is widely regarded as one of the world’s finest living clarinettists, as well as an outstanding composer, arranger and conductor. His own compositions are approachable, engaging and imaginative, while his carefully curated concert programmes are known for their balance and artistic harmony.
Widmann often places his own works alongside those of composers such as Mendelssohn and Schumann. On this occasion, one piece by each will frame two of his own compositions. The deeply personal character of the evening will be further highlighted by a violin concerto Widmann dedicated to his sister, Bavarian State Prize-winner Carolin Widmann, who will perform it at the end of the first half of the concert.
After the interval, Widmann will take to the stage himself to perform a short solo clarinet piece. Following music inspired by the stark beauty of the Scottish landscape and Widmann’s innovative sound world, the concert will conclude with Robert Schumann’s joyful composition celebrating the anticipation of spring.
