New Survey Reveals Most Residents Against Cars on Chain Bridge
Most Budapest residents agree with the current traffic order on the Chain Bridge, under which only buses, taxis and cyclists may use the road, according to a recent survey.

In all, 54% said they agree with the current arrangement, while 40% would allow car traffic to return to the bridge and 6% had no opinion.

Those in favour of restricting car traffic are in the majority in almost all age groups, most notably in the 30-39 cohort, where 74% would rid the bridge of cars.

Those over 65 years old are almost evenly divided on the question, with 46% in favour of banning cars and 47% against.

Some 24% of respondents said they cross the bridge by car every day, and 21% at least once a week.

The results are based on a survey conducted by 21 Kutatóközpont and Medián.

A final decision will be made in the summer of 2023 after soliciting the opinions of Budapest residents.

Until then, the BKK is providing 20% more capacity than previously for those who travel across the Chain Bridge by public transport.

Residents will be able to make a well-founded decision on the matter after a six-month test period, the city said.
