Fidesz Torpedoes EV Battery Factories Debate in Hungary
Fidesz deprived Parliament of quorum on Monday, thereby torpedoing the day of debate planned by the opposition to discuss the EV battery factory to be built in Debrecen and battery factories in Hungary more generally.

Fidesz said the special debate is not necessary because the issue will be discussed in Parliament at its next regular meeting.

Fidesz MPs generally boycott such sessions, leaving Parliament without quorum, HVG notes, adding that this scenario has played out on 13 of the 16 days of debate initiated by the opposition since 2010.

Fidesz also boycotted a meeting of Parliament’s sustainable committee on the same topic last week.

The refusal to deal with the current battery factory topic in a separate meeting indicates that the issue is unpleasant for the government, HVG observes, as the high environmental impact of such plants and the lack of involvement of local people in the planning against similar investments in several locations across the country have sparked strong protests, demonstrations and referendum initiatives.

The government wholeheartedly supports, for example, the battery factory planned for Debrecen by Chinese company CATL, and disparages the protesters.
