By Mary Murphy: While out on Friday night, a Hungarian friend mentioned that the Monk of the Gulag had died earlier this week (January 15th), aged 100. As I’d never heard of him, I asked her to tell me some more.

Joseph Haydn's oratorio proclaims the greatness and incredible richness of earthly existence, with each passage revealing the particulars of this miracle to the listener like a picture book - with vibrant colours, great warmth and charm, and no little humour.
