Critically Acclaimed Nawal In Concert, Budapest Festival Theatre, 22 October
"The voice of the Comore Islands: this is how guitar and gambusi exponent, singer and composer Nawal is generally known. The Comore Islands lie north of Madagascar and it's one of the poorest countries in the world. In her performances, Nawal brings traditional and modern music together in a modern fusion of the Indo-Arab-Persian music of the Indian Ocean, Bantu polyphony, syncopated rhythms and Sufi trance music.

Her songs talk of the importance of education (over half the country is illiterate), unity, peace and love.

As the Comore Islands first internationally renowned performer, Nawal has been making music for twenty years and taken her songs around the globe. Although her family moved to France when she was still a child, they were strict practising Muslims and wanted their daughter to follow their lifestyle. But she rebelled and despite the difficulties created her own independent musical career. She frequently returns home where she is immensely popular.

On her current tour, Nawal sings, plays the guitar and gambusi (a lute from Yemen), accompanied by bass and percussion. She generally sings in her own native tongue, Shikomor (which like Swahili is full of Arabic influence) but also addresses audiences in English, French and Arabic. It is said that “when you hear Nawal, you dance, dream, meditate and fly above the Indian Ocean simultaneously”.

Besides her voice she has an entrancing personality that enraptures audiences. Nawal currently lives in Paris and is working on her third album.

Concert starts at 8 p.m.
