Biography of Julio Carrasco Bretón

The Mexican painter and muralist, Julio Carrasco Bretón, was born in 1930 in Mexico City. He graduated as a chemical engineer at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), later he made a good use of these studies while developing and applying different kind of painting techniques. Lino Picaseño y Cuevas the legendary Mexican painter and architect was among his masters at the San Carlos Fine Arts Academy.

Since 1973, his work has been shown in several individual and collective exhibitions in over 19 museums of the world. Lately, he has been living and working in Paris and Mexico: his lithographs are both made in the Atelier Bramsen in Paris and the Studio Mario Reyes in Mexico.

“The art of Julio Carrasco is marked by various influence from pre-hispanic art till the works of big muralist such as Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros José Clemente Orozco and Rufino Tamayo- this latter from the latest generation of the muralists” said Macario Matus the reputable art critic.

The oeuvre of Julio Carrasco contains approximately 50 mural paintings, commissioned for several universities, public offices, art institutions in Mexico, Spain, Italy and Canada- just to mention a few countries. Among them are the Supreme Court of San Lazaro, the House of Deputies in Mexico City, the Municipality of the City of Monterrey or the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria.

His canvases displaying abstract and geometric forms have a wide scale of subjects, generally from the problematic of philosophy, mythology and the protection of the environment; most of his paintings express the high social sensibility of the artist.

His mural called the “Epopee of the intellectual”, made in Paris was installed in the main building of the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva. This painting was made with a special technique named by him “isopolymer” that is based on a mixture of silicon and marble powder that makes the mural rollable and transportable wherever it is destined.

This latter is a typical characteristic of all his murals: the work is done in his atelier and the ready-made murals are collocated on the venue later.
