Last year about 230,000 officially registered Hungarians lived in European countries. Of those, 33% were resident in Germany, 20% in the UK, and 13% in Austria.

There was a significant increase in Hungarian emigrants to Spain, Italy and the Netherlands in recent years.

According to the 2011 census, 143,000 Hungarians had been living abroad for more than a year and 70,059 for less than a year.
