Xpat Opinion: 'Felni’ Beer Bistro Budapest Review
As the trend for craft beers grows, so does our appetite for them. The summer has seen a revolution in the consumption of craft beers in and around the capital, in various festivals. Situated in downtown Pest is a bar that serves a variety of craft beers. ‘Felni’ opened its doors in February 2013 and has since developed its thirst for up-and-coming beers each and every month. They come from small breweries - and maybe niche at the moment - but the desire for something a bit different has never been more evident.

In ‘Felni’, there are 70 different kinds of beers from all over the world. During the summer, ‘flavoured’ beers were the more sought after with plum, grapefruit and sour cherry taste.

Popular craft beers are Kaltenecker IPA, ‘Keseru Mez’, Samson, Brandecker, Primator Wheat, Primator Premium. Prices range for a “korsó” between 390-850 HUF. The most expensive one is often the so-called “guest beer” that changes each month.

With good beer, we need good food and beer snacks are available here too. Fresh bread is baked every day for the various sandwiches, served with craft jams like chilli & apple.

Also on the menu: the famous Czech ‘hermelín cheese’, home made hot dogs and tomato chutney. As well as ‘cheese chips’, roasted and crisp, it goes down well with the cold beer.

The bar itself has a unique style owing to the fact that it used to be a car tyre garage. ‘Felni’ is the name of the wheel disc, and it is used as part of the interior design and the theme of the bar. The place is relaxed and unfussy, which a bar should be, especially with these home comforts.

In October, a ‘beer history’ stand-up program is in the plans.

Their philosophy: ‘We serve the same way how we would like to be served!’

‘Felni’ is in Jókai utca 1. (6th district), open from Mon-Fri 10am-11pm & Sat 2pm - 11pm. Wifi and two large TV screens are available too.
