Key Points Revealed: Big Changes to Bus And Rail Pass Systems Soon in Hungary
All types of passes on state railway company MÁV and state coach service Volán will be abolished from March 1, as only countrywide and county passes will be available, Construction and Transport Minister János Lázár announced at a press conference held with mayor László Papp in Debrecen.

New passes will be introduced valid for 24 hours on all MÁV and Volán routes in single counties or across Hungary.

The system of discounts will also be reformed, as 43 of the current 65 concessions will be abolished, including the discount for civil servants.

People working in education and healthcare, as well as public employees, will be provided with unlimited travel with a 50% discount, replacing the stamp-collecting system.

Travel will be free for those over 65 and children under 14. Travel for those who now are entitled to a 90% discount, such as large families and the disabled, will be free.

Bank card payments will be allowed on all Volánbusz lines from the autumn. A Ft 200 administration fee will then be charged for cash payments. This would favour payment by bank card and reduce the number of abuses.
