New 'Cake of Hungary' & Winners of Saint Stephen’s Day Bread Contest Announced
Hungary has revealed the winners of this year’s prestigious national cake and bread competitions during a ceremony held on Thursday at the Parliament building in Budapest.

The Cake of Hungary 2025 title was awarded to “DCJ Stílusgyakorlat” (“Stylistic Exercise”), a rich and elegant dessert made with chocolate, caramel, and sour cherry by Kézműves Cukrászda in Gyula, southern Hungary.

Created to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the iconic Dobos cake, this modern reinterpretation features bold flavours and striking vertical layers. The cake combines sour cherry jelly, almond praline, caramelised sugar sheets, and smooth chocolate buttercream, all balanced on a crisp sponge layer made in the original Dobos style — paying tribute to its inventor, József C. Dobos.

The Sugar-Free Cake of the Year went to “Álmodozó” (“Dreamer”) by Alfréd Kovács of Édes Vonal Cukrászda in Vác, near Budapest.

This dessert captures the essence of traditional Hungarian favourites like Lúdláb and Rigójancsi, using a cocoa-almond sponge, cinnamon-sour cherry chia compote, and a gently sweetened milk chocolate cream — all without added sugar. A crunchy chocolate layer with crushed cocoa nibs adds a refined texture.

Organised by the Hungarian Confectioners’ Guild and the Egy Csepp Figyelem Foundation (A Drop of Attention), these competitions aim to honour Hungarian baking traditions while encouraging innovation and healthier ingredients.

Winners of the Saint Stephen’s Day Bread Competition, now in its 14th year and organised by the Hungarian Bakers’ Association, were also announced.

The top prize went to the “Alföldi Pajta”, a rustic spelt bread from Balmaz Sütöde in Balmazújváros, eastern Hungary.

  • The Innovative Bread Award was claimed by Varga Pékség bakery of Mórahalom for its Mediterranean-style loaf made with extra virgin olive oil.

  • In the pastry category, the Három Tarka Macska Bakery took the spotlight with “Augusztusi álom” (“August Dream”), a dessert filled with cherry sauce and brownie.

The award-winning cakes and breads will be available for the public to taste on August 20, Hungary’s national holiday, during the Street of Flavors culinary festival in Budapest.
