Xpat Interview: Katalin Varga, Former MD, InterClub Hungarian Language School
Katalin Varga was born and (only partly) raised in Budapest. Due to her father's work she spent 6 years of primary school in Berlin, so German became her second mother tongue. After moving back to Hungary at the age of 14 she went to grammar school where she started her English studies, and

also started playing volleyball.

Loving languages Katalin applied to the College for Foreign Trade, majors English and German. She spent her college years with studying, playing professional volleyball, along with some interpreting jobs. After her graduation from college in 1990, Katalin spent 4 years with looking for THE JOB. Amongst other things she worked for a Danish publishing company, as a merchandising manager.

Her job was to sell the copyright of various cartoon-characters for use on merchandise such as balls, pens, rubbers, and such. Not too fond of this job but having Danish, Dutch, Austrian, German and Swiss colleagues, the idea of establishing a Hungarian language school came fast.

So, after taking a big deep breath, Katalin founded InterClub Hungarian Language School in the summer of 1994. Since then the school has been successfully providing services to foreigners living in Hungary . She says, "you can study Hungarian in groups at IC, at home or at your office. The teachers are all very experienced, friendly and speak at least one foreign language."
