Taking care of orchids at home is neither difficult nor so easy like in case of a common indoor plant. During the spring exhibition of the Hungarian Orchid Society visitors can get acquainted with orchids easy to keep at home and can get answers to all their questions related to the care of these beautiful plants.
Till then there are some „naps” to guarantee our orchid’s wellbeing and beauty and above all -to get it burst into flower again:
• Pose it at a bright place where minimum daily 2-3 hours of sunlight is assured
• Water it once in 7-10 days during the winter and twice per week in summer;
• No stagnant water under the pot like at Saintpaulias, neither poured in the middle of the plant water like at bromelias
• Soil must be humid but never soaked;
• For rich blooming lots of light is needed, so the pot must be placed at a bright spot or additional nursing light is to be installed at 40 cm distance from the top of the plant. Yellow or fallen buds are generally due to deficiency of light;
• Transplant the orchid in a new pot filled with special orchid substrate at least once in two years;
• Some difference between the day and night temperature is needed to start shanking;
• Air movement is important for orchids but never place them in a draft;
• Orchids love humidity therefore some indoor plants are needed around them or a room vaporiser to be installed;
• Regular fertilisation is required with special orchid nutrient once a week in summer and once per month in winter. Add blooming starter nutrient to the irrigation from middle of summer till early winter.
Domestic and international traders are waiting for visitors with vast choice of blooming orchids during the opening hours.
