Open Farm Days: 'Taste Your Way Across the Hungarian Countryside'
From August 22 to October 4, spanning five distinct weekends, rural family farms, wine cellars, and artisan workshops across 19 regions of Hungary will open their doors for the annual Open Farm Days event series.

Operating under the inviting theme “Taste Your Way Across the Countryside!”, the initiative is designed to guide visitors directly into the world of traditional Hungarian flavors, animal husbandry, and local crop production, as reported by Turizmus.com.

According to the Rural and Regional Development Support Unit of the Herman Ottó Institute Nonprofit Ltd., which coordinates the countrywide event series, the decisions to expand follow a highly successful pilot program held last year across five selected regions.

The initiative has already shown significant appeal. In 2025, more than 15,000 visitors traveled to approximately 150 participating family farms across Hungary, with petting zoos and a diverse range of culinary programs drawing the largest crowds.

Csaba Fieszl, the head of the Rural and Regional Development Support Unit at the Herman Ottó Institute Nonprofit Ltd., emphasized that the primary goal of the project is to promote agritourism, build stronger direct relationships between local producers and consumers, and actively support shorter, more sustainable food supply chains.

For expats and locals alike, the event series offers an accessible way to engage directly with rural Hungarian culture.

Visitors can choose from a broad variety of free activities, as well as limited-capacity workshops and curated tastings, making it an ideal weekend escape for both families and groups of friends.

Throughout the Open Farm Days, those attending will have the chance to participate in hands-on activities centered on the creation of local products.

The lineup features diverse culinary and musical programs, guided farm tours, regional wine tastings, and traditional craft workshops. These interactive sessions allow guests to become active participants in the creative process.

Specific activities on offer include educational programs on medicinal herbs, beeswax candle making, live demonstrations of blacksmithing and woodcarving, pottery, paper and basket weaving, and the preparation of traditional regional dishes.

For families traveling with children, petting zoos, pony rides, and guided walks around the properties offer an immersive look at rural life.

The event series is scheduled across consecutive weekends, each focusing on a different region of the country. The program begins on August 22 and 23 with a showcase centered on the Szatmár-Bereg region.

This is followed on September 5 and 6 by the "It is Great Here!" weekend. Later in the month, from September 19 to 20, the focus shifts to the area stretching from Sümeg to Bakonyalja.

On September 26 and 27, the Mediterranean South weekend will highlight open farms spanning from Zselic through the Mecsek hills all the way to Sárköz.

The event series concludes on October 3 and 4, featuring open farms situated in the scenic Alpine Foothills of western Hungary.
