Police to Operate in 'Simpler, Clearer' System in Hungary from 1 October
The Hungarian police will continue its work in a simpler and more straightforward system from October 1, the interior minister announced.

Gabor Posfai wrote in a Facebook post that the guiding principle of the reorganisation was "one task for one branch", and that similar or closely related tasks would be rearranged under unified professional management to make responsibilities clearer and reduce parallelism.

As part of this, the Anti-terrorism Centre (TEK) and the National Bureau of Investigations (NNI) will operate directly under the control of the National Police Headquarters (ORFK), while the NNI, leaving the Standby Police, will continue its work as an independent national crime-fighting body, the minister said.

TEK will focus on special operations and personal protection tasks, while unified facility protection tasks will go to the Standby Police, he wrote.

Posfai added that the Parliamentary Guard will cease to exist as an independent organisation, with its personal protection tasks going to TEK and its facility protection tasks to the Standby Police. "The uniforms and routine of the guard, however, will be retained," he wrote.

The minister said the change was not about dismantling existing professional capabilities; the goal was precisely to distribute tasks more clearly, unify command and simplify cooperation while retaining the specialised expertise, the personnel and the equipment.

"Each task should have a single owner. And it must be clear who is responsible for ensuring it is carried out properly," Posfai wrote.

He added that a significant portion of the administrative and operational changes associated with the reorganisation had already taken place in recent months, but many tasks concerning the new organisation still lay ahead, and if anything needed to be adjusted in the transition, "we will do that, too."
