Escape from Budapest to Lombok: Natural Alternative to Bali for Affordable Luxury - 2
- 12 Mar 2025 5:36 PM

What makes this stunning natural paradise island even more appealing is that it delivers world-class luxury at a fraction of the price compared to say the Maldives, the Caribbean, or even neighbouring Bali.
The people of Lombok may not have the colorful Hindu processions of Bali, given the island's predominantly Muslim faith, but their smile and welcome is just as warm to one and all - even in parts of Lombok where westerners are rarely seen.
Just like Bali there is a population of around 4 million people on Lombok, and there has been a cultural link between these islands since before the 18th century.
Back in time when Bali was comprised of five kingdoms, Lombok was under the rule of The Karangasem, a Regency in the east of Bali. Much later bitter battles with the Dutch saw Lombok’s Balinese King (Anak Agung Singosari) dethroned and the indigenous Sasaks fell under Dutch rule - along with the rest of Indonesia, except for Bali.
That's where such similarities end. In the 1860’s Lord Alfred Russell Wallace came through the region and was the first to note the differences in flora and fauna between Bali and Lombok. Old maps of his travels reveal that the straits between Bali and Lombok indicate the “Wallace Line”; a place where Southeast Asian ends and Australasia begins.
Remarkably Affordable Luxury in Lombok
Modern development in Lombok has seen a considerable increase in accommodation of an international standard over recent years, with numerous luxury resorts now operating around the island.
Yet the high-end private villas, infinity pools overlooking the ocean, and first-class spa treatments here are all remarkably affordable, making Lombok a destination where travellers can indulge in true luxury without an extravagant bill.
Fine dining, personalised boat trips, and facinating cultural excursions are all available at a cost that allows visitors to do more, stay longer in luxury, and experience the island more deeply.
Selecting Where To Stay - Location Defines Your Holiday's Style Here
Whether situated in Lombok’s more northern shores, close by to Mount Rinjani’s hiking trails and the lovely Gili Islands, or positioned in the west near Senggigi’s vibrant coastal scene, each resort’s setting offers a unique perspective on the island.
Some resorts like The Oberoi offer complete seclusion, ideal for couples craving privacy and relaxation, while other luxury accomodations such as the Sheraton provide convenient access to local markets, historic temples, and adventurous day trips.
Choosing the right base allows visitors to tailor their stay to their personal travel style - whether that means days filled with exploration or uninterrupted moments of serenity by the sea - as the first part of this article explains in detail.
