Bid-Rigging Inquiry into Aug 20 Events Launched by Budapest Police

Budapest police have launched an investigation into the public procurement for organising this year’s series of state events around the August 20 national holiday, the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) said in response to an inquiry by news website 24.hu.
The website reported on Wednesday that the investigation was launched on suspicion of the crime of bid-rigging in a public procurement and concession procedure.
Laszlo Toroczkai, leader of opposition Our Homeland, announced on Aug 26 that his party had filed a complaint with the Central Chief Prosecutor's Office of Investigation over the procurement for the government's August 20 celebrations, on suspicion of, among others, bid-rigging.
He said that before the procurement was announced, Miklos Zelcsenyi, the ruling Tisza Party's event organiser, had already held talks on organising the event, with the involvement of Hardrock, the eventual winner of the tender, on behalf of government commissioner Mark Radnai.
Radnai, Tisza's deputy leader and government commissioner for a functioning and humane Hungary, responded that he had in no way taken part in the procurement or organisation of the state celebrations, noting that organising Tisza Party events had been his task until May 9, and after the formation of the government his job did not involve the staging of state events.
While his email address appears in copy on some of the published correspondence, he said he had not read the messages in question, had not replied to them, and had learned of their contents from the press.
