A total of 329 new titles will be on show at the 86th annual Book Week, which begins on Thursday, Book Publishers and Distributors Association president László Péter Zentai, told reporters yesterday. More than 200 publishers from Hungary and other countries will be present at 147 booths on downtown Vörösmarty tér and the nearby Váci utca and Deák Ferenc utca.

Publishers from 24 countries have bought the rights to film director Péter Gárdos’s novel Hajnali láz (“Fever at Dawn”) the story of how his parents met and fell in love in 1945. After surviving the Holocaust, Miklós Gárdos was in a Swedish refugee camp when he asked for a list of Hungarian Jewish girls who were also temporarily housed in Sweden.

András Kepets, owner of the Ulpius-ház publishing company, is hiding out in Canada, according to the tabloid Blikk. Kepets has been unavailable for weeks to his colleagues and the new management, while the company holds many outstanding debts.

The state purchased primary schools textbook publisher Apáczai in great secrecy this week, several sources confirmed to Népszabadság on Wednesday. The funds necessary for the deal were raised by the cabinet in a resolution approved on March 20.
