Zoltan Szabo, the head of the centre, recalled that Charles had inaugurated the central building of the medical university in October 1918.

Zoltan Szilvassy, the rector of the university, said that the inauguration had been "the last such official event of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy", adding that the universities integrated under the name Debrecen University had now become the country's largest higher education centre.

Archduchess Eilika von Habsburg told the ceremony it was of symbolic significance that Charles's last public appearance had been linked to "science, education and peaceful construction".

She highlighted Debrecen as a traditional centre of Hungarian culture, with special regard to the Reformed Church's contributions to cultural development.
