Xpat Opinion: The New Ethics Textbook For Hungarian Fifth Graders

What can one say about the newly introduced ethics textbook for Hungarian fifth graders? For starters, it is not, strictly speaking, an ethics text. Ethics is not a branch of religion, and being ethical is not the same as following the law or adhering to societal norms. So a textbook that lauds religious virtues and advocates unquestioning civil obedience doesn’t belong in an ethics class.

"In the USA, turning Dollar bills into ashes is verboten. Title 18, Section 333 of the U.S. Code says that if one does, the offender “…shall be fined not more than $100 or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.”

Just like other expat kids in Hungary, on Monday morning this week Shiloh, Pax and Maddox all attended class in Budapest. Unlike most expat children though the Jolie-Pitt kids had former-SAS bodyguards, as well as police and paparazzi, around them at the start of school. Some local mothers were apparently disappointed that Angelina didn't bother taking the kids to school herself, Brad wasn't ...
