"Futile acquaitance, the unconscious, like a blind old lady, tumbles
without knowing where it goes and what it does. Unacquaintance brings fervor, in which Deed, the rigorous effect of earlier acts forms the unconscious like the potter who makes a pot out of mud. Conscience comes from fervor, which is unsteady, just like the monkey in the forest running from tree to tree."

Xpat Opinion: New Hungarian Education System: Model Was France
- 25 Feb 2013 8:00 AM
- current affairs
I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me before. Rózsa Hoffmann, the Francophile, most likely turned to the French system when under her stewardship the whole Hungarian primary and secondary education system was turned upside down. Among other things, she wanted children to start their language education with a romance language (clearly she had French in mind) and wanted to discourage the study of ...

Although the leaders of HÖOK insist that “student unity” is intact, I see it differently. The Orbán government as usual has managed to drive a wedge between the two organizations: HÖOK, the present-day KISZ, and the newly formed HaHa (Hallgatói Hálózat). Just as it managed to divide the trade unions and negotiate only with the ones loyal to the government. And the same thing happened a couple of ...

Xpat Opinion: Signing In A Bilingual Home In Budapest
- 15 Jan 2013 8:00 AM

I am a big fan of baby sign-language. I like it on many levels. My first encounter with sign-language happened in Ireland while working with autistic children. It was such a great help to be able to communicate with these children. Years later, when I heard about baby sign-language from an American friend, I got very interested as it fit right into my new field of work; moms and babies. So for ...
Xpat Opinion: Voter Registration Abandoned But The Culture War Heats Up In Hungary
- 7 Jan 2013 8:00 AM
- current affairs
Pro-government columnists suggest that the government has backed down elegantly, disproving the charges of arrogance and authoritarianism often levelled against it, while according to centrist and left-leaning analysts, the government tested the water of public feeling and realized it had too much to lose on the registration issue.
