Budapest Design Week To Open With 'Slow Design Exhibition' On 28 September
- 7 Sep 2012 9:00 AM
Organised by Budapest Design Week, the focus and the title of the opening exhibition is in line with the 2012 slogan of the designfest: Slow Design, which means slowing down and filling your life with content and profundity.
The concept of Slow Design took root in the design profession a decade ago; above all it refers to a democratic and holistic approach to designing, by taking the entire life-cycle of objects into consideration, it is a responsible and conscious design practice focusing on the long-term impacts of design, it believes in sustainable development, in regionalism and cultural diversity, in local values and uniqueness.
The material of the exhibition is grouped around thirteen topics that explore design solutions reflecting to social, economic or ecological issues: Design it Yourself, Eco-design, (G)localism, Inclusive Design, Low Tech, Narrative Design, New Craft, Recycling: Downcycling – Upcycling, Reinterpreted Traditions, Simplicity, Socially Responsible Design, Urban Bicycle Culture and Urban Farming.
The international and Hungarian examples selected from 12 countries present concepts and creative attitudes related to Slow Design in the widest spectrum possible. The unique material of the exhibition introducing recent design works, most of which have received international awards, has surprises in store even for the experts of the design profession. In addition to modern and daring material use, the exhibited objects are characterised by strong individuality, while the creations redefine the concept of waste.
You can see a chandelier made of plants or a chair constructed from rusty pipes, as well as a multifunctional tool offering a solution to the basic problems of the homeless or the most recent examples of urban farming.
The unusual installation is designed by the team of sporaarchitects that was listed among the world's thirty most exciting architecture offices by Wallpaper in 2010. The curator of the exhibition is Rita Mária Halasi, the project manager is Éva Tornyánszki.
The exhibition is supported by the Israeli Cultural Institute in Budapest and the Embassy of Israel in Budapest.
Organised for the ninth time this year, Budapest Design Week takes place between the 28th of September and the 7th of October 2012.
The festival is supported by the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office and the National Cultural Fund of Hungary, with the Hungarian Design Council serving as its patron and is organised by Design Terminal, an institution of Forum Hungaricum.
