Hungarian Opinion: Remembering Former PM Gyurcsány's Infamous Őszöd Speech
In the leading pro-government daily, commentators remember the Őszöd speech leaked 15 years ago – and thank Ferenc Gyurcsány for helping Fidesz stay in power.

Magyar Nemzet’s Ottó Gajdics claims that Hungary must remember former PM Gyurcsány’s ‘Őszöd speech’, leaked 15 years ago.

The pro-government columnist contends that the speech revealed how reckless and irresponsible the former Socialist-Liberal coalition was. They governed Hungary to the brink of insolvency and used violence against peaceful protesters as well, Gajdics writes.

He fears that if the opposition wins next year’s election, the same politicians and ideologies defeated in 2010 will return.

Writing in the same daily, György Pilhál sees former PM Gyurcsány as a jackpot for the governing parties. Pilhál attributes the landslide victories of Fidesz in the past three elections to Ferenc Gyurcsány’s presence on the Left.

He believes that Ferenc Gyurcsány’s ‘support’ will be crucial for the governing parties to secure another electoral victory in 2022.
