Matild Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Budapest Honoured by 2 Gold Key Awards
Presented by Boutique Design magazine, Gold Key Awards for Excellence in Hospitality Design is the industry’s oldest and most prestigious awards program for hospitality interiors. Matild Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Budapest has won the categories of "Best Hotel Luxury" and "Best Guestroom Luxury" at this year’s official award ceremony.

The luxury hotel, located in the iconic building of Matild Palace, is part of The Luxury Collection portfolio of Marriott International and has been recognized as "Hungary's Leading Hotel 2021" by World Travel Awards and selected among the best new hotels in the world on several prestigious international travel lists.

Gold Key Awards’ winners were announced on 15th November during the Gold Key Awards Gala in New York. The winners were nominated and selected by a high-profile jury of hospitality industry leaders from the operations, design, development, and investment sectors. At the 41st annual award ceremony, Matild Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Budapest has been awarded "Best Hotel Luxury" and "Best Guestroom Luxury".

Matild Palace Hotel, belonging to the portfolio of Marriott International, made its debut in the reborn iconic building of Budapest this summer. The hotel offers an exceptional choice of 111 guestrooms and 19 suites, the majority of which provide stunning views across the entire city and take inspiration from The Duchess’ interests and exuberant lifestyle and early 20th century Budapest, allowing the design and interiors to remain authentic to the building’s history.

Five-year transformation

Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, Matild Palace has undergone a meticulous five-year transformation led by award-winning interior designer Maria Vafiadis from MKV Design and acclaimed local architects Péter Dajka and Antal Puhl. The property’s interior aesthetics celebrate the building’s rich heritage, rooted in the culture and high society of Budapest, while crafting a new, modern destination for locals and global explorers alike.

Leading the interior design for Matild Palace project was a perfect opportunity for MKV to bring our company values to life, as they are so aligned with The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts’ brand values.  We created a narrative around the exuberant lifestyle and artistic friends of Her Imperial and Royal Highness Maria Klotild of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha who commissioned the original palace. We combined elements that complemented the building's architecture with features reflecting Hungary's craft heritage, a colour palette reminiscent of the city’s roofscape and the finest materials, while achieving a hotel that is relevant and comfortable for 21st Century travellers,” said Maria Vafiadis, Founder and Managing Director of MKV Design.

It's an immense honour for us that Matild Palace Hotel received the prestigious "Best Luxury Guestroom" and "Best Hotel Luxury" accolades at the Gold Key Awards in New York. After a detailed and challenging five years renovation, the historic building is now shining again as it was in 1902. The interiors of Matild Palace and the compelling design narrative rooted in Hungarian culture, invite guests on an enchanting historical journey through time, which is an important element of the hotel experience,” said Selim Ölmez, Hotel Manager of Matild Palace.
