US Report on Human Rights Paints Dismal Picture of Hungary
The US State Department's annual human rights report on Hungary for 2022, compiled in co-operation with NGOs dealing with human rights, presents a dismal picture of the country, HVG reports.

It writes that the independence of the judiciary is regularly attacked or directly undermined.

The report says the same about freedom of the press, saying that the government seriously restricts media freedom and specifically censors reports published in the media.

The report also alleges that NGOs are intimidated and that their work is impeded on legal grounds, and that civilians who deal with refugees are punished legally and financially.

Refugees arriving in Hungary are particularly vulnerable to being expelled from the country.

The rights of sexual minorities are curbed in Hungary, the report continues, as extremists threaten lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender persons as well as queer and intersexual persons.

The analyst deals separately with corruption in Hungary, writing that the state provides privileges to certain economic figures.

Although the government earlier took some vague steps to identify and investigate the activities of corrupt officials and bring the really corrupt ones to justice, in those cases where the suspicion of corruption arose in connection with high-ranking politicians, action was limited.

Technically… no. But politically? There might be a way. From blocking Ukraine aid and sanctions on Russia, to diverging from core EU values on democracy and human rights, Hungary has become the EU’s most disruptive member. But can the EU really expel a country against its will?
