Watch: Xplore Hungary Etyek-Buda Wine Region
The Etyek–Buda wine region (usually shortened simply to “Etyek”) is a compact but prestigious PDO region covering just 1,652 hectares of vineyards. It lies west of Budapest, stretching from the Buda Hills towards Lake Velence — Hungary’s second-largest lake — and northwards to the slopes of the Gerecse Hills.

This is a gently hilly landscape rather than mountainous, with beautiful rolling countryside and more limestone soil than anywhere else in Hungary.

Etyek is also one of the coldest wine regions in the country, with an average annual temperature of just 9.5–10.5°C. Grapevines need a minimum average temperature of around 10°C to grow, so Etyek sits right on the climatic edge of viable winegrowing. Its position near the 47th northern parallel, combined with cold northern winds, keeps temperatures low.

The region also receives more rainfall than most Hungarian wine regions — around 600 mm per year, compared to the national average of 450 mm.

All of this results in wines with fresh, vibrant acidity, chalky minerality from the limestone soil, restrained fruit and a classic cool-climate character. And there is one famous wine region in the world with remarkably similar conditions.
