Speaking at an anti-war rally of the Digital Civic Circles in Szombathely, in western Hungary, Orban said Ukraine's future remained unresolved. He suggested that the possible outcomes of the conflict were total Russian occupation, an unlikely Ukrainian-EU victory pushing Russia back to Moscow, or a scenario akin to "another Afghanistan".

"We face the least risk by staying out of any conflict on Ukrainian soil while strengthening our own defences," he said.

The prime minister highlighted Hungary's record-high foreign exchange and gold reserves, as well as unprecedented military investment, saying: "Hungary has never spent so much on modern weapons and building an army capable of stopping anyone who would threaten us."

Trump assures Orban of his full support in connection with upcoming Hungarian elections

US President Donald Trump has assured Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban of his full support in connection with the upcoming Hungarian elections. Orban shared Trump's Truth Social message on his Facebook page on Thursday, saying "Message from America. Thank you Mr President!"

Trump said: "Highly Respected Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, is a truly strong and powerful Leader, with a proven track record of delivering phenomenal results. He fights tirelessly for, and loves, his Great Country and People, just like I do for the United States of America.

Orban: Hungary US's only European ally on peace

Hungary is the only ally of the United States in Europe on the issue of peace, the prime minister said in an interview to public radio on Friday.

Asked about US President Donald Trump’s recent endorsement of his re-election campaign, Viktor Orban said that during the previous election, the "left-wing US administration" had considered supporting the left-wing opposition in Hungary to be important. "But things have changed since then," he added.

He said there was a long-standing alliance between the US president and Hungary, adding: "we worked well together during his first term."

"Our philosophy is that the essence of foreign policy is to gather friends," Orban said. "We have been successful in America because there is a major international issue -- the war in Europe, the Ukraine-Russia war, the question of peace and war -- on which we agree and where the United States needs support."
