New Olympic Studies Center Launched in Hungary
The Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) is raising the bar in international research. On Thursday, it inaugurated the SPIRIT Olympic Studies Research Center, aiming to establish itself as a top hub for the Olympic Movement in Central and Eastern Europe.

SPIRIT it's an acronym for the center's core pillars: Sports, Performance, Inclusion, Research, Innovation, and Training. Lajos Mocsai, chairman of the university foundation's board of trustees, explained: “Sport is based on hard physical work, but the spirit and psychology behind it are indispensable. The work at this center must also serve as a moral guide.”

The center's main goal is to organize the knowledge and values of the Olympic Movement and share them worldwide. In a region rich with sporting traditions, it will foster scientific ties and connect sports, science, and society.

Rector Tamás Sterbenz stressed the value of partnering closely with the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB). After last year’s celebrations — marking 100 years of HUSS and 130 years of MOB — SPIRIT represents the next step to boost the university's global profile.

László Fábián, MOB Secretary General, called the project unique: “There are only ten to twelve comparable research centers worldwide. This underscores the importance of social science research for modern elite sports.”

Led by Nikoletta Sipos-Onyestyák (Chair of Sports Management), SPIRIT has set these goals:

* Building a platform for Olympic studies.
* Hosting international conferences and expert forums.
* Digitizing Olympic archives to safeguard historical knowledge.
* Launching a summer university for students worldwide.

The center's motto captures its essence: “The Olympic Movement is not just a sporting event, but a value system, a social phenomenon, and a field of research.”
