Through chess, games and interactive experiences, it will explore how to question what we see, evaluate information and think independently.

You don't need to be a chess expert to enjoy the event, which offers something for families with children, educators and curious visitors as well as experienced chess players. The day will feature tournaments, family challenges, quizzes, creative activities, AI-focused sessions and opportunities to meet Judit Polgár.

Chess in an Art Gallery

The setting adds another dimension to the event. Rather than taking place in a conventional venue, the festival fills the Hungarian National Gallery with chess, games, creative activities and interactive experiences from 10:00 to 17:30.

The programme includes the Generation Clash Chess Tournament, Chess Challenge Tournament, adventure trails, arts and crafts, quizzes and the Chaturanga Mission, alongside sessions exploring chess and AI in education and parenting.

At the heart of the festival is its founder, Judit Polgár, widely regarded as the strongest female chess player in history.

Visitors will have opportunities to meet Polgár, take part in a Q&A and have books signed. The festival also uses her Chess Palace educational approach to demonstrate how chess can develop strategic thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills.

Rubik Meets Chess

The festival also celebrates another iconic Hungarian invention through RubikChess, combining the logic of chess with the Rubik's Cube.

It is part of the event's broader approach to showing how chess can connect with science, design, creativity, education and other forms of problem-solving.

Chess, AI and Creativity

Artificial intelligence is a particularly strong theme this year. Programmes include Chess Palace, Generative AI and Critical Thinking in Education and Chess and Artificial Intelligence in Parenting, reflecting the festival's focus on navigating a world where distinguishing fact from illusion is becoming increasingly important.

A Chess Festival for Everyone

Competitive players can take part in dedicated tournaments, but the event is designed just as much for families, children, educators and curious visitors.

The Chess Challenge Tournament, for instance, is open to unrated players and those with a maximum FIDE blitz rating of 2000, with participation free of charge. The Generation Clash tournament meanwhile brings different generations together in family teams.

There is also plenty for younger visitors, including the Chaturanga Mission, an interactive chess-themed adventure aimed at children aged six and above.

For expats, this festival offers a distinctly Budapest combination of culture, creativity, plus one of Hungary's most internationally recognised chess celebrities - all inside one of the city's major cultural institutions.
