BISB Remains the Only UK Accredited British School in Hungary
The British International School Budapest (BISB) has retained its British Schools Overseas (BSO) accreditation, confirming this school’s position as the only one in Hungary officially accredited by the UK Department for Education.

The accreditation follows a recent inspection assessing teaching quality, leadership, safeguarding, student outcomes and overall standards against benchmarks used in England’s independent school system.

This outstanding accreditation provides independently verified assurance that BISB meets the standards expected of British independent schools.

Accordingly, parents can have confidence that the school has undergone a rigorous external inspection covering key areas including teaching and learning, safeguarding, student welfare, leadership, curriculum provision and academic outcomes.

It also demonstrates BISB’s commitment to continuous improvement, accountability and providing an educational experience that prepares students successfully for their future studies and lives beyond school.

Key strengths highlighted by inspectors:

1. Strong Leadership and Continuous Improvement

Inspectors praise leaders (at all levels) as “knowledgeable and skilled” who evaluate the school’s provision carefully and identify well-considered priorities for development. They also note that BISB leaders accurately identify areas for improvement and use evidence to drive school development.

2. Exceptional International Community and Culture

One of the strongest statements in the report is that the community has been “successful in creating a harmonious school community of pupils from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.” They note that pupils demonstrate respect for differences, understand democracy and individual liberty, and value diversity.

3. High Quality Teaching and Strong Student Outcomes

Inspectors find the curriculum to be well planned, teaching to be effective, and pupils to make good progress. They specifically note that examination results are strong and older students are supported to access a variety of university destinations and courses around the world.

4. Outstanding Support for Multilingual Learners and Students with Varied Needs

With pupils learning through the English language, inspectors highlight the school’s expertise in supporting EAL learners and students with additional needs (SEND). They note how well these students are helped to access the curriculum and how this supports them in making the same levels of progress seen by other students at BISB.

5. Strong Safeguarding and Student Wellbeing

Safeguarding is described as a “secure safeguarding culture”. Staff are well trained, concerns are followed up promptly, and leaders work effectively with external agencies to support pupils. Alongside this, inspectors recognise the extensive emotional wellbeing support available to students.

Located in Buda’s 3rd District, BISB educates students from Early Years through to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and is part of Nord Anglia Education’s global school network. It combines the English National Curriculum with international programmes and external partnerships.

This British Schools Overseas (BSO) accreditation confirms that BISB continues to meet UK standards for British schools overseas, maintaining a distinction not currently held by any other school in Hungary.

The school recently issued thanks to students, staff and parents for their continued support and commitment to BISB. The school kindly announced that this achievement reflects the collective efforts of everyone who contributes to making the school such a positive, caring and successful community.

"This is something in which all concerned can take great pride, and it reinforces a shared commitment to providing an outstanding educational experience for every student at BISB".
