The opposition Socialist Party is looking for ways to offer prescription drugs free of charge to people older than 65, the leader of the party said, Gyula Molnár, said at an event organised in cooperation with pensioner unions. The total cost of such a programme, covering drugs prescribed by family physicians, may not cost as much as an annual 20 billion forints (EUR 64.7m), he said.

To meet the year-end financing needs in the sector, the Hungarian government has decided to raise this year’s healthcare appropriations by HUF 54.1 billion, Hungarian news agency MTI reported, based on a government resolution published in the latest edition of official gazette Magyar Közlöny.

Reforms in Hungary’s drugs fund saved over 10 billion forints (EUR 32.2m) for patients since 2011, with price cuts on 760 drugs in the past two years, human resources ministry state secretary Bence Rétvári said. The government has focused on reducing patients’ spending on drugs ever since 2010 and, due to the measures introduced, burdens decreased annually, he said.
